The findings reveal a significant pain reduction of 8.96/100 compared to all comparator treatments, suggesting melatonin's effectiveness in managing chronic musculoskeletal pain. However, when compared to placebo arms, the reduction was not statistically significant, indicating a need for further research to establish its efficacy in this specific context.
The meta-analysis included nine eligible randomised controlled trials, involving approximately 450 participants, who received 3-10mg/day of melatonin for chronic musculoskeletal pain. The conditions studied encompassed fibromyalgia, knee osteoarthritis, and neuropathic pain, highlighting the broad applicability of melatonin as a potential treatment.
What makes this research particularly intriguing is the comparison with Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). However, the study's findings also underscore the importance of further investigation. However, the need for further research is paramount to ensure that melatonin's promise is fully realised and that it can be recommended with confidence.
